Before You Change Tax

Tax settings affect item setup, sale totals, invoices and reports. The owner or accountant must approve the regime, registration status and rates. Record the effective date and avoid changing the model halfway through an open reporting period.

  • Confirm the legal entity, branch country and tax registration status.
  • Ask whether displayed item prices already include tax or tax is added at checkout.
  • List every rate used by the catalog, including zero-rated or exempt goods.
  • Complete a test sale and a test purchase before training cashiers.

Choose the Tax System

ChoiceWhat it meansUse it when
Automatic (from country)Posnic follows the shop country profile. The branch country and registration follow the normal local model.
VAT / GST credit methodSales tax and eligible purchase input credit are tracked. The registered business claims input credit.
Sales tax no input creditTax is collected on sales without a purchase-credit workflow. The jurisdiction uses retail sales tax or the business cannot claim input credit.
No consumption taxCatalog and sales operate without VAT, GST or sales tax.The business is unregistered or legally does not collect consumption tax.

Save the Regime

  1. Open Manage -> Tax -> General.
  2. Choose the Tax system. Leave Automatic selected unless the accountant requires an override.
  3. For India GST, set invoice GST behavior, registration type, turnover-above-5-crore status and QRMP only from filing records.
  4. For US sales-tax workflows, enter the resale certificate only when the business has a valid certificate.
  5. Click Save in the Tax System card.
  6. Reload the page and confirm the badge and selected option still match the approved regime.

Set the Default for New Items

  1. Create all required rates first in Tax Rates.
  2. Return to General and tick Apply a default tax rate to new items when most products share one rate.
  3. Select the approved rate and save Tax Defaults.
  4. Create a temporary item and verify its Tax card inherited that rate.
  5. For mixed or mostly untaxed catalogs, leave the default off and assign tax item by item.

Change-Control Checklist

  • A new default affects newly created items; inspect existing items separately.
  • Do not assume changing a rate rewrites old finalized receipts.
  • Train staff on inclusive versus exclusive prices before the first live sale.
  • Export or retain the accountant's approval and the first verified receipt.
